Advanced Zirconia - Metal-Forming Tools

Metal-forming tools made from Morgan Technical Ceramics Melbourne (MTC Melbourne), formerly Carpenter Advanced Ceramics, Mg-PSZ consistently out-perform tooling made from conventional materials in a range of operations where tooling deformation, wear, galling or corrosion are a problem.

MTC Melbourne’s Mg-PSZ:

  • Works where other materials fail.
  • Provides long tool life with little or no rework, resulting in significant cost savings.
  • Increases product quality, throughput and yield.
  • Can be used to produce custom manufactured tools to your specifications or blanks for in-house finishing.
  • Is available in specific grades to match your needs.

Benefits of MTC Melbourne’s Mg-PSZ

When metal-forming tools suffer from wear, deformation, galling or corrosion, the result is a degradation of product quality and process efficiency. Loss of dimensional control, poor surface finish, high scrap rates and low productivity are all common problems. You experience more downtime for tooling changes. Frequent rework and large tool inventories become necessary. The bottom line is - this all costs you money.

Zirconia Components for Metal FormingTooling made from MTC Melbourne’s Zirconia can eliminate, or significantly reduce many of these problems. It maintains its strength and hardness at high temperatures, thereby maintaining its resistance to wear and loss of dimensional control.

Its non-galling, non-wetting working surfaces provide superior surface finish on your products. It outlasts conventional tooling materials by a wide margin, and you get longer runs, better yields and superior product quality - at a lower cost.

No More Compromises

Metal-forming tools such as dies, punches, rolls, mandrels, guides, etc. all eventually fail due to inherent weaknesses in the materials from which they are made. It is the engineer’s job to consider the trade-offs - cost versus performance and come up with the best tool for the job. That often means sacrificing in some areas to achieve improvements in others. Previously, the result often was a compromise between tool performance and tool life.

Now you may never have to compromise again. The reason is MTC Melbourne’s Mg-PSZ, the patented transformation-toughened, partially-stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ) ceramic. It has the potential to change your perceptions on tooling materials forever.

It has long been recognized that ceramic materials have many properties that could make them superior to conventional metal or alloy tooling, including excellent wear resistance, rigidity and ability to withstand high temperatures. Unfortunately, they also had a fatal flaw… brittleness. Until now!

MTC Melbourne’s Mg-PSZ is a strong, tough, resilient ceramic that can stand up to the toughest metal-forming process. It is impact resistant - there is no need to handle it with kid gloves. It is inert - it won’t react with the metals being worked. It is wear resistant - oxides and scale have little effect on its rock-hard surfaces. And high operating temperatures are not a problem. After all, the melting point of zirconia is almost 2800°C! Now there’s a ceramic material that can deliver what others have only promised.

MTC Melbourne Delivers

MTC Melbourne manufactures finished or semi-finished custom-made tools or blanks that you can finish yourself. MTC Melbourne’s ability to produce large and complex components is unequalled. We will provide assistance to help you develop cost-effective components.
